The current Panathenaic Stadium rests on the site where the ancient Olympic games took place to honor the goddess Athena beginning thousands of years ago. Today it is the only stadium in the world made completely out of white marble and was home to the first modern day Olympics in 1896. Only 14 countries competed in 43 events that year, however much has changed since then when 204 nations competed in 302 events during the London 2012 games. The Olympics have been and will continue to be the greatest sports event in the world, bringing nations together and showcasing the best physical human abilities from around the globe.
