Playing Behind Enemy Lines

Kosova's "Sharr"Mountains National Park was never an intended destination but proved to be quite the adventure. I started out on a peaceful stroll from Prizren and on the outskirts of the city was startled by 2 boys training 2 German Shepherds to fight in the forest. I set off as fast as I could in the other direction, finding myself lost in "Sharr" Mountains National Park. I could see through the thick mist what appeared to be a fortress atop one of the mountains and set out for it.

Crossing frozen streams and through dense brush I finally got to the foot of the mountain. Ascending would turn into a most difficult task. Following the trail left by mountain goats was the best option although too small for human feet it had me gripping loose rock walls for dear life. The vegetation was too scarce leaving nothing to hold onto, making for a slow ascent. Soon other obstacles began posing challenges such as the many rings of barbed wire that required maneuvering and once over making it impossible to turn back.

It took nearly 3 hours to get up but from the top revealed stunning scenery from this long abandoned German turned Serbian fortress. The daunting task of coming down over the barbed wire and finding my way back to the city would take another 3 hours. Upon arrival back at my hostel I looked in the mirror at myself covered in mud, barbed wire torn jeans, and blood stains. All I could think of was the movie 'Behind Enemy Lines.' An epic and unintentional day trip.
